COMMON NAME: Golden Lion Tamarin (GLT)
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Leontopithecus rosalia
DIET: Mainly fruit and nectar. Also insects.
YOUNG: Twins are frequently born. The lead female begins having young when she reaches 18 months of age. The entire group raises the Golden Tamarin babies.
HABITAT: Swampy forests in the eastern part of Brazil.
FACTS:
- Infant care is cooperative. All members of the group will carry an infant.
- The adult male of the breeding pair - the baby Golden Lion Tamarin's father - usually does the largest share of child rearing.
- The mother only takes the babies to nurse them.
