COMMON NAME: Golden Lion Tamarin (GLT)
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Leontopithecus rosalia
DIET: Mainly fruit and nectar. Also insects.
YOUNG: Twins are frequently born. The lead female begins having young when she reaches 18 months of age. The entire group raises the Golden Tamarin babies.
HABITAT: Swampy forests in the eastern part of Brazil.
FACTS:
- The hair is longer and darker around the face, forming a mane on top of the head and on the cheeks and throat - causing the lion-like appearance.
- The father of the breeding pair is very active in raising the young.
- He frequently carries the babies on his back, allowing the mother to forage.
